Giant reed grass thrives in warm environments and is not cold-hardy; it will freeze to death if winter temperatures drop below 0°C. Therefore, to ensure its safe overwintering, suitable conditions must be provided. What are these conditions? They are as follows:
What are the overwintering conditions for giant reeds?
The key to overwintering giant reed grass is proper temperature control; its growth temperature should not be lower than 12℃. During the cold winter months, it should be moved indoors or into a greenhouse to overwinter; it should not be planted outdoors.

What are some winter protection measures for giant reeds?
1. Land preparation and fertilization
Before winter, deeply till the soil and apply sufficient base fertilizer to improve the cold resistance of the giant reed plants. Generally, apply 500-1000 kg of organic fertilizer or 10-15 kg of phosphate fertilizer per acre as base fertilizer.
2. Straw mulching
Organic materials such as rice straw, wheat straw, and corn stalks are commonly used, and a covering thickness of 10-50 cm is generally preferred. This helps to keep warm and absorb moisture.
3. Mulching
To protect the plant from the cold, a polyethylene film bag measuring 130 cm long, 85 cm wide, and 0.02 mm thick can be used to cover the giant reed plant, and the edges of the film can be sealed with soil.

4. Smoke insulation
Burn firewood, cow dung, sawdust, waste engine oil, red phosphorus, or other dusty materials that produce a lot of smoke half an hour or an hour before the frost arrives. This smoke can prevent the loss of heat from the ground, and the smoke itself will also generate some heat, generally raising the temperature of the air near the ground by 1-2°C.
5. Greenhouse insulation
Transplant giant reed seedlings in 20 holes per square meter into a plastic greenhouse, covering the gaps between the roots and stems with soil, and then water thoroughly. The overwintering effect is excellent.
