Coconut coir, derived from the coconut fiber on the surface of coconut shells, is a widely used raw material for hydroponics and soil conditioners. There are five methods for preparing nutrient soil using coconut coir:
1. Formula One
A mixture of fine coconut coir, coarse coconut husk, and perlite in a 5:3:2 ratio creates a potting mix that is exceptionally loose and breathable, with good water retention and drainage. However, its biggest drawback is that it contains no nutrients and requires fertilization.
If you want to use this type of potting soil for growing flowers, it is recommended to mix in some well-rotted sheep manure or earthworm castings. The amount added should not exceed 1/10 of the potting soil. If possible, you can also mix slow-release fertilizer directly into the soil, and later sprinkle some slow-release fertilizer on the soil surface. Generally, one or two small spoonfuls of slow-release fertilizer is sufficient for a 15cm diameter flowerpot.
2. Formula Two
Mix coconut coir and peat moss in a 1:1 ratio. You can also add a small amount of perlite or volcanic rock to increase soil permeability and prevent waterlogging.
3. Formula Three
In addition, coconut coir can be mixed with garden soil in a 3:2 ratio. However, this nutrient soil formula is not very fertile and often needs to be supplemented with some organic fertilizer .
4. Formula Four
A mixture of coconut coir, peat moss, and perlite, or imported peat moss mixed with perlite in a 3:4:1 ratio, is sufficient for planting most indoor ornamental plants.
5. Formula Five
If you are planting succulents , use coconut coir, peat moss, and granular soil (such as akadama soil, maifanite , kanuma soil, diatomaceous earth, or zeolite) in a 1:1:1 ratio.
