Our Forests are Dying – Here’s What You Can Do About it

Living in the 21st century, climate change has become an unavoidable topic. Surely you have seen news reports about the Amazon forest disappearing or sea levels rising. And if you live in a city, you might notice how little green there actually is left in our daily lives. Trees and plants play an important part in our environment by taking CO2 and turning it into oxygen for us to breathe. This is why many people are worried about nature disappearing all around us. Have we got you worrying yet? Here’s three things you can do to bring back nature.

Create an urban jungle

If you live in a city you may not have a lot of outdoor space. If you’re lucky you’ve got a small garden, but most of us make do with a balcony or even no outside space at all. This is where the so-called ‘urban jungle’ comes in. Think of bus stops with roofs made out of moss, or walls covered in ivy. See if you can plant some new plants in your window sill, or grow herbs and vegetables on your balcony. Cities may not seem like it, but they are full of animals and these animals will be very grateful for the extra green you provide them.

Make your garden nature proof

Stone gardens are becoming more and more of a trend, as they are easy in upkeep. However, there are many downsides to a tiled garden. When it rains, water has nowhere to go, and this will cause flooding, creating the risk of severe water damage to your house. Additionally, in summer, a tiled garden will be a hot garden, as the stone does not absorb sunlight the same way that grass does. Aside from benefits for yourself, a garden full of grass and plants is also great for any animals living near you. You can purchase special plants that attract bees or create little piles of leaves that hedgehogs can live in during wintertime.

Invest in new trees

Maybe you own a lot of land and you’re not entirely sure what to do with it. Or maybe you don’t have any outside space at all, and would like to support the creation of more nature financially. Luckily, there are more and more tree planting companies all over the world. These companies can take dry, barren, abandoned lands and fill them with lush trees once more. Slowly but surely we can increase the amount of trees in the world instead of decreasing it, thanks to technological advancement and green initiatives.
