If you find that some pigs are unable to stand up, you must deal with it immediately. Generally, pigs being unable to stand up is mainly due to the following five diseases, and farmers should use medication to prevent and treat them in a timely manner:

1. Streptococcus

Streptococci can cause disease through infection via the umbilical cord or skin wounds, primarily infecting weaned and fattening pigs, presenting as acute suppurative arthritis. Affected pigs exhibit fever, lameness, reluctance to stand, swollen joints, and purulent exudate in the arthritis.

Medication: Streptococcal vaccines can be administered for prevention. Antibiotics such as ampicillin, tetracyclines, and sulfonamides are effective in the early stages of streptococcal infection.

2. Haemophilus parasuis infection

This disease mainly occurs in pigs aged 2 weeks to 4 months, and can sometimes also infect newly adult pigs. Affected pigs are lame, have difficulty standing, or even become paralyzed. They may also develop arthritis, encephalitis, emaciation, and rough coat, with inflammation and edema in the tissues around the joints.

Medication: Ciprofloxacin and ceftiofur sodium can be used. It is recommended to treat this disease by combining antibiotics with traditional Chinese medicine such as Yinhuang injection and Houttuynia cordata injection, with two injections per day for three consecutive days.

3. Swine mycoplasma disease

In fact, both Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Mycoplasma synoviae can cause arthritis in pigs. Symptoms in affected pigs include disheveled coat, depression, loss of appetite, difficulty breathing, lameness, and joint swelling.

Medication: It is recommended to use drugs that are relatively sensitive to mycoplasma, such as tiamulin, tylosin, doxycycline, and enrofloxacin. Tiamulin or doxycycline hydrochloride can also be added to feed, which have good therapeutic and preventive effects against mycoplasma.

4. Calcium deficiency and nutritional insufficiency

Lameness and paralysis caused by malnutrition and calcium deficiency often occur in pregnant sows, as well as postpartum paralysis due to insufficient nutrient supply and insufficient calcium and phosphorus in self-prepared pig feed.

Medication: Adjust the diet to be nutritionally balanced, give the sick pigs intramuscular injection of VD2 colloidal calcium, or intravenous injection of glucose calcium injection. Eggshells, bone meal, etc. can also be added to the pigs' feed.

5. Foot-and-mouth disease

The main symptoms include fever, lameness, blisters on the hooves, mouth, tongue, and breasts, and rotting hooves. It is highly contagious and has a high mortality rate, and occurs mostly during the cold winter and spring seasons.

Medication: Disinfect hooves and other affected areas. Strictly disinfect pig pens and pig farms. Amoxicillin, enrofloxacin, multivitamins, and astragalus polysaccharide can be used in drinking water for 3-5 days.
