Rose propagation time and methods

Many people cultivate roses , and they are generally propagated using methods such as cuttings, division, layering, and grafting. Among these, cuttings are the most common method. Here are five points regarding the timing and method of rose cuttings:

1. Cutting time

Rose cuttings are typically taken in spring and autumn, with the highest survival rates occurring between February to April and September to October. During these periods, the warm and comfortable climate reduces the likelihood of bacterial growth, and the warm, humid conditions are more conducive to root development and survival, ensuring a higher success rate.

2. Soil selection

Rose cuttings require loose, fertile, well-draining soil. You can mix humus and garden soil in a 1:1 ratio and add a small amount of perlite to increase soil aeration.

3. Selection of scions

Select robust, disease-free branches from the rose bush, ideally young shoots or branches after flowering. Use sterilized tools to cut the branches to approximately 10-20 cm in length, making a slanted cut at the base. Remove the leaves from the base, leaving 2-3 tender leaves at the top. Soak the branches in rooting hormone solution for about 30 minutes, then remove and allow them to air dry in a well-ventilated area.

4. Cuttings method

Insert the dried rose cuttings into the holes and compact the surrounding potting soil. Water thoroughly and cover with a thin film. Then place the pot in a cool, well-ventilated place, maintaining a temperature of around 20℃, and wait for the rose cuttings to root.

5. Post-treatment maintenance

Move the rose cuttings to a shady spot, as rose cuttings only need a small amount of light in the initial stages. Water them daily to keep the soil moist, but avoid overwatering to prevent waterlogging. Roots should develop in about 10 days. At this point, you can apply a small amount of fertilizer, gradually increasing the amount as the rose grows to promote faster growth.
