The umbrella tree, also known as the "Eight Directions of Wealth" or "Goose Feather Tree ," is an evergreen plant with high ornamental value and air-purifying properties, making it a popular houseplant. So, what are the cultivation methods and precautions for the "Eight Directions of Wealth " umbrella tree ? Let's find out.

1. Soil

Schefflera cannot grow in heavy, compacted alkaline soil. It prefers loose, well-drained, fertile, slightly acidic sandy soil. A suitable soil mix can be made by combining 5 parts peat moss, 3 parts leaf mold, and 2 parts river sand. A small amount of cake fertilizer can be added to the bottom of the pot as a base fertilizer.

2. Light

Schefflera needs 4-5 hours of sunlight daily. Indoors, it can be placed in diffused light or partial shade. In winter, it can tolerate full sun. However, prolonged exposure to excessive sunlight can cause leaf burn spots or even complete yellowing. If grown in a shady environment, the plant is prone to etiolation (leggy growth), and the leaves will also turn yellow.

3. Watering

Schefflera prefers a humid environment but is also drought-tolerant. Water thoroughly when the soil is dry, but avoid overwatering. In spring and autumn, water once or twice a week. In the hot summer, water daily to keep the soil moist. In winter, growth slows down, and water once every 5-7 days. Regularly mist the leaves to increase humidity and keep them a vibrant green and glossy.

4. Fertilizing

Schefflera arboricola prefers fertilizer, but care must be taken not to apply too much. Raw or concentrated fertilizer can easily burn the roots, leading to yellowing and leaf drop. When fertilizing Schefflera arboricola, adhere to the principle of "light and frequent application of fertilizer." If you are not familiar with fertilizers , you can buy slow-release fertilizer . Sprinkle a dozen or so pellets around the edge of the pot each time. After watering, the fertilizer will seep into the soil with the water, and the effect can last for up to six months.

5. Pruning

The apical dominance of the umbrella tree is significant, and the main branches are prone to excessive growth. Older plants that have been growing for many years can have excessively large tops, making the plant shape particularly unsightly. Pruning can be done at the same time as repotting, removing some dead roots and excessively long roots, while also cutting off excessively tall branches to encourage the growth of lateral branches, making the plant fuller and revitalizing it.

6. Precautions

During the summer when sunlight is too intense, the Schefflera should be placed in a well-ventilated, shady location to avoid direct sunlight. In winter, the temperature should be kept above 5℃. Temperatures below 0℃ will cause frost damage. When keeping it indoors, frequently open windows to ensure air circulation, which will promote healthy growth.
