Citrus fruits originated in China and have a long history of cultivation, making them one of China's famous fruits. Regions like Hunan, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Fujian, Zhejiang, and Guangdong are currently major citrus-producing areas in China. So, when is the best time to plant citrus seedlings? Let's find out below.
When is the best time to plant citrus seedlings?
Citrus seedlings can generally be planted in spring (February-March) or autumn (September-November). However, the specific timeframe depends on the growth characteristics of the citrus trees and the climate conditions.

How to plant citrus seedlings properly?
1. Garden construction and soil improvement
Choose a flat site with convenient irrigation and drainage, deep soil, high fertility, loose soil, and good physical and chemical properties for planting citrus seedlings. After selecting the site, promptly mark the spacing with lines, dig planting holes, improve the soil, and cultivate on raised beds.
2. Seedling selection
When selecting seedlings, priority should be given to high-quality seedlings with a thick main trunk (stem diameter of 0.8cm or more), 3-5 main branches that are evenly distributed, a seedling height of 40cm or more, strong branches and shoots, well-developed root system, and free from diseases and pests.
3. Planting methods
It is best to prune and trim the roots of the seedlings before planting. Pruning removes unnecessary branches and leaves, reduces water evaporation, and prevents disease. Root trimming promotes the growth of new roots and improves the survival rate of the seedlings. When planting, pay attention to the appropriate depth, with the soil covering the rootstock 1-2 cm above the surface of the planting bed.

4. Planting density
For citrus seedlings, it is recommended to plant them at a density of 2m between plants and 3m between rows, with 111 trees per acre, to achieve early and high yields.
5. Post-planting care
After planting, regular inspections are necessary to promptly identify and address pests and diseases. Additionally, fertilization should begin one month after transplanting the citrus seedlings, following the principle of "light and frequent fertilization," applying fertilizer once a week. The frequency of fertilization can be increased after flowering. Watering appropriately after each fertilization can promote nutrient absorption.
