Is it permissible for private individuals to cultivate datura?
While small-scale private cultivation of datura is permitted, large-scale cultivation by individuals is prohibited. For sale purposes, approval from relevant authorities is required; otherwise, it is illegal. However, because datura is a poisonous plant, it is not advisable to cultivate it at home, especially if there are children, pregnant women, or pets in the household.
Precautions for planting datura
1. Seed selection
Datura seeds mature in winter. Select healthy, plump, and mature seeds. Do not choose shriveled or cracked seeds, as this will seriously affect the germination rate.
2. Soil
Datura grows mostly in the wild and is not very demanding in terms of soil, but it thrives best in soil rich in humus and limestone . After selecting a suitable location, you can turn the soil over appropriately and apply a suitable amount of well-rotted farmyard manure to increase soil fertility.
3. Sowing
Dig holes in the selected location with a shovel, 10-12cm deep, with a plant spacing and row spacing of 6cm x 6cm. Sow 4-5 seeds in each hole. After sowing, cover with a thin layer of soil and spray water to keep the soil moist.
4. Maintenance
Datura prefers a warm growing environment, and ample sunlight promotes better growth. In summer, it can be appropriately shaded to prevent leaf scorch. In winter, take measures to keep it warm, water promptly when the soil dries out, and avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot. Before flowering, a small amount of fertilizer can be applied to promote bud growth; gradually stop fertilizing in autumn and winter.
