When is the best time to plant grapevines?
Grapevines can be planted in spring or autumn. Spring planting is generally between February and March, while autumn planting is between October and November. Autumn planting is recommended because grapevines do not require a acclimatization period, and the temperature and climate at this time are ideal for grape growth.
Grapevine Planting Methods
1. Site Selection
When planting grapes, it's best to choose a sunny location with well-drained and fertile soil. Before planting, apply 1000 kg of well-rotted cow or sheep manure per acre and then deeply till the soil. During planting, ensure the supports are deeply buried; cement pillars can be used, spaced approximately 5 meters apart.
2. Planting
Grapevines need to be spaced properly, generally about 2 meters apart. Before planting, the seedlings should be pruned, leaving 3 or more tender buds, and the lateral roots should be shortened, leaving 15 cm at the base. Dig a shallow hole 30 cm deep, place the seedling in the planting hole, spread out the roots, do not circle the roots, and backfill the surrounding topsoil, tamping the soil around the roots as you go.
3. Post-management
Newly planted grapevines must not be allowed to dry out; the soil must be kept moist. The first watering should be thorough, and subsequent watering should be based on soil moisture. During the first year, the soil should be kept consistently moist. After planting, a small amount of compound fertilizer can be applied monthly to promote vigorous growth and facilitate shaping of the vines. Generally, fertilize continuously for four months, then cease fertilization before leaf fall in autumn.
