Sheep manure has a very mild fertilizing effect, will not burn roots, and its fertilizing power is very long-lasting. There are five main points to consider when fermenting sheep manure:

1. Fermentation time

The fermentation time required for sheep manure varies depending on the season and temperature. Fermentation is fastest in summer, taking only 15 days to complete, while it takes about 30 days in spring and autumn. In winter, the fermentation time can be extended to 2-3 months.

2. Mixing of materials

The mixture mainly consists of sheep manure, requiring a large quantity. Generally, 20%-30% straw needs to be added to the material for better fermentation. The straw includes rice straw, wheat straw, etc. The material moisture content is approximately 50%; the standard is that it should be moist enough to see water between your fingers but not dripping, and crumble easily when released. A general recommendation is to mix sheep manure and wheat straw in a 9:2 mass ratio.

3. Accumulation

Pit the sheep manure mixture to a height of 1.5 meters, a width of about 2 meters, and a length of at least 3 meters. Pay attention to the temperature; if the outside temperature is below 15℃, cover the pile with plastic film or straw mats.

4. Add fermentation and composting agent

To accelerate the fermentation of sheep manure, we can add an appropriate amount of fermentation and composting agent, which can shorten the fermentation time and process. If farmers are in a hurry to apply fertilizer, they can use this method. During fermentation, the manure should generally be turned over when the temperature rises above 50 degrees Celsius.

5. Fermentation complete

After turning the sheep manure 3-4 times, when the temperature stops rising and drops below 45 degrees Celsius, it can be considered that the sheep manure is fully decomposed. Well-decomposed sheep manure has no odor, is relatively loose, and has mycelium growing on it. At this point, insect eggs and other contaminants in the material have been killed, and it is safe to use.
