Scorpions, also known as whole scorpions, are a traditional Chinese medicinal material . With increasing demand, many regions have developed artificial scorpion farming . So how exactly is whole scorpion farming done? Let's find out below.
1. Construct scorpion breeding ponds
When artificially breeding scorpions, it is important to simulate their living environment as much as possible. Based on the scale of scorpion breeding, construct scorpion ponds of appropriate size and build gap-filled walls in the ponds with stones , bricks, and tiles to provide the scorpions with ample space to move around, which is conducive to improving the survival rate.
2. Select suitable breeding scorpions
For breeding scorpions, select medium-sized, robust males and females with high reproductive rates. Because scorpions have a cannibalistic nature, pay attention to density during rearing; separate them by size, as uniform size promotes synchronized growth.
3. Constant temperature feeding
Scorpions are poikilothermic animals and hibernate. Their growth and development are greatly affected by temperature changes. To improve the reproduction rate of artificially raised scorpions and ensure their rapid growth, it is necessary to break their hibernation period and provide them with constant-temperature rearing. Heating equipment can be installed in the scorpion farm to maintain the temperature at 28-30 degrees Celsius, which is conducive to scorpion growth.
4. Feeding
Scorpions are carnivorous, feeding on insects, terrestrial mollusks, and other small, soft-bodied animals, with a particular fondness for soft, juicy, and protein-rich creatures. In artificial breeding, mealworms are commonly used as feed, supplemented with earthworms, ground beetles, bran, watermelon rinds, and other natural food sources.
5. Management during the molting period
During the molting period, the average daily temperature should be controlled at 25-30 degrees Celsius, the soil moisture content of the scorpion nest can be 15-20%, and the relative humidity of the air should be maintained at around 80%. After the scorpions molt, the food provided should be nutritious and palatable, and should be fed in small amounts frequently to prevent the scorpions from cannibalizing each other due to hunger.
6. Daily Management
Scorpions may resort to cannibalism when food is scarce, water is lacking, the environment is dry, or their population density is too high; therefore, caution is advised. Furthermore, scorpions strongly avoid strong odors such as paint, gasoline, kerosene, asphalt, as well as various chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, and quicklime; these substances must be avoided in scorpion farms.
