The term "genetically modified" (GM) is familiar to many, especially in China, where GM technology is being vigorously promoted across the country. Conversely, powerful countries in Europe and America are restricting or banning GM technology. Why is this? The reasons are as follows:
1. Ensuring food security
As a populous country, China has always prioritized feeding its 1.3 billion people. In the process of rapid industrialization and urbanization, overcoming constraints on resources such as arable land and water, and ensuring national food security and a long-term, effective supply of agricultural products , ultimately relies on the innovation and application of technologies such as genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
2. Promote sustainable agricultural development
Genetically modified (GM) technology can improve crop resistance, adaptability, and yield, holding enormous potential for agricultural development. The promotion of GM crops can reduce pesticide use, improve the quality of agricultural products, increase farmers' income, and achieve sustainable agricultural development.
3. Promote rural revitalization and development
my country has a large population and limited land resources, with arable land being particularly scarce. Furthermore, the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, along with the proliferation of illegal construction, has led to the pollution and destruction of much land. Genetically modified crops, however, possess advantages such as stress resistance, water conservation, and salt tolerance. They can not only reduce the cost of pesticides and fertilizers and avoid environmental pollution, but also align with my country's rural revitalization strategy.
4. It is conducive to my country's scientific and technological innovation.
Genetically modified (GM) technology is a significant achievement in the field of modern biotechnology and a manifestation of technological innovation. Since the 1980s and 1990s, China has achieved a large number of important results in the research and development of GM corn, rice, cotton , and even animal genetically modified organisms.
5. Promote the development of the bio-industry
Transgenic technology is one of the core technologies for the development of the bio-industry. It can be applied to multiple fields such as medicine, industry, and environmental protection, creating new products and services, forming new markets and demands, and driving the development of related industrial and innovation chains.
