Blueberries are a very popular fruit , prized for their soft, juicy flesh and delicious taste. They are widely cultivated, so how do you plant and care for blueberry seedlings ? Let's find out.
1. Site selection
Blueberry nurseries should be planted in areas with loose, well-aerated, and well-drained soil. The soil pH should be between 4.4 and 5.5. If the pH value is uncertain, a soil testing instrument can be used to test it.
2. Land preparation
After selecting the site, deep tilling (to a depth of 20-25cm) should be carried out a year before planting, in conjunction with green manure application. If there are many weeds, herbicides can be sprayed a year in advance to kill them. For soils that do not meet the requirements of blueberries, soil improvement should be carried out before planting to facilitate blueberry growth.
3. Planting
Blueberry seedlings are typically planted in the fall or spring. Dig a planting hole of appropriate size, then place the blueberry seedling in the hole, gently cover the roots with soil, and compact it. Water thoroughly to help the roots adhere well to the soil.
4. Light
Blueberry seedlings need plenty of sunlight, but they should not be exposed to strong sunlight for extended periods. They can be exposed to moderate amounts of sunlight in the morning or evening.
5. Watering
Blueberry seedlings require a lot of water and the soil needs to be kept moist. However, overwatering should be avoided, and water should not be allowed to accumulate at the roots.
6. Fertilizing
Blueberry seedlings require targeted fertilization. Organic fertilizer is generally applied in spring and autumn/winter. During the fruit development period, a high-nitrogen fertilizer is needed to promote fruit growth.
7. Pruning
During the growth of blueberry seedlings, pruning should be done frequently to remove overgrown branches and diseased branches in order to keep the plant neat and beautiful.
