Long beans germinate quite quickly, generally in about 4-7 days. However, suitable temperature and humidity conditions are necessary for them to germinate and emerge from the soil rapidly.
What are the key points for planting long beans?
1. Select superior varieties
Select bean seeds that are intact, brightly colored, have clear patterns, and are free from pests and diseases. Regarding varieties, since long beans can be cultivated in spring, summer, and autumn in regions south of the Yangtze River in China, with a long growing season, it is best to select appropriate varieties based on the climatic conditions of each season.
2. Land preparation and fertilization
Choose land with deep, organic-rich soil that has not been planted with long beans the previous year. Before sowing, plow the soil to a depth of 25cm and apply 5000kg of organic fertilizer and 50kg of vegetable-specific compound fertilizer per acre as base fertilizer. Then level the soil into small beds 1.2m wide for sowing.
3. Seed treatment
One to two days before sowing, the seeds can be sun-dried, and then soaked in 30℃ warm water for 5-6 hours. Then, treat the seeds with 0.3% of their weight of 50% carbendazim wettable powder or 70% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder to kill pathogens on the seed coat and reduce the occurrence of diseases.
4. Sowing method
When cultivating, it is best to prepare the land into raised beds rather than planting directly on flat ground. A raised bed cultivation method can be used, with a bed height of 20 cm, a bed spacing of 70 cm, one row planted per bed, and a plant spacing of about 50 cm. Sow 2-3 seeds per hole.
5. Precautions
The optimal temperature for bean seeds to germinate is above 25℃, with a minimum requirement between 8-10℃. If the temperature remains below this range for an extended period, germination will be difficult. Therefore, it is crucial to prevent low temperatures and frost in early spring to avoid seed rot after sowing, which could necessitate reseeding.
