Kiwifruit is one of the most popular fruits on the market, with excellent economic returns and simple cultivation management, leading to its cultivation in many regions. So, where are kiwifruit seedlings suitable for planting? Let's find out below.
1. Latitude
Kiwifruit seedlings are concentrated and grow well in the region between 30 and 35 degrees north and south latitude. Major kiwifruit producing countries in the world, such as New Zealand, Chile, and Italy, are located in this region.
2. Altitude
Kiwifruit thrives at altitudes between 200 and 800 meters, with around 500 meters being the most suitable. It is not suitable for growth below 150 meters or above 1200 meters.
3. Precipitation
Kiwi seedlings prefer a warm and humid climate. Kiwis need abundant rainfall, with an annual precipitation of more than 1,000 mm and a relative humidity of not less than 70% to grow and develop well.
4. Temperature
Kiwi seedlings thrive best in areas with an average annual temperature of 15–18.5°C. The extreme maximum temperature should not exceed 42°C, and the extreme minimum temperature should not fall below -16°C.
5.Frost period
Kiwi seedlings grow and bear fruit normally in frost-free or low-frost areas, requiring a frost-free period of at least 180 days.
6. Wind power
Kiwifruit is susceptible to damage from wind; strong winds often break tender branches, shatter leaves, and cause fruit to rub against each other and become bruised. However, kiwifruit can be successfully cultivated in areas with strong winds, even with protective forests in place.
7. Slope aspect
The aspect of the mountain slope has a certain impact on the growth of kiwifruit. South-facing slopes receive strong and long hours of sunlight, resulting in high summer temperatures, high evaporation, and susceptibility to drought and sunscald. North-facing slopes have lower temperatures and are prone to frost. West-facing slopes are exposed to intense afternoon sunlight, which can easily scorch branches, leaves, and fruits. For artificial cultivation, gentle slopes with a southeast or east-facing slope of less than 15 degrees are ideal.
8. Soil
Deep, fertile alluvial soil and sandy loam are suitable for growing kiwifruit. The optimal soil pH for kiwifruit growth is between 5.5 and 6.5; pH values below 5 or above 7 are detrimental. It's important to note that kiwifruit requires more micronutrients than other crops, therefore, appropriate amounts of iron, magnesium, and boron fertilizers should be applied annually.
