Should urea or compound fertilizer be used as fertilizer for wheat during its greening process?
It depends on the growth of wheat in different plots and the application of base fertilizer. Generally, wheat grown in fertile soil grows well under normal circumstances and can safely overwinter. After the winter, it can still grow well with only urea as a top dressing. Conversely, wheat grown in poor soil is weaker and cannot guarantee safe overwintering. It may turn yellow, wilt, or turn purple. In this case, it is recommended to apply a more nutritionally complete compound fertilizer to promote the wheat's recovery and ensure the final yield.
How should fertilizer be applied when wheat is turning green?
1. Fertilization time
When applying topdressing fertilizer to wheat in spring, it is necessary to wait until the soil thaws and the temperature rises to 6-8 degrees Celsius or above for 3-5 consecutive days. It should also be done on sunny and warm days (from 10 am to 3 pm). Topdressing fertilizer is not suitable when the temperature is too low or the weather is too cold, or when there is a significant drop in temperature in the coming week.
2. Fertilization methods
There are two main methods of fertilization: one is to spread fertilizer across the entire field and then water it (the fertilizer is applied to the ground), and the other is to fertilize by hoeing and digging furrows along the ridges and then water it (the fertilizer is applied to the ground).
3. Amount of fertilizer applied
When applying topdressing fertilizer to wheat in the spring, the appropriate amount of urea is generally around 10-15 kg per mu (approximately 0.067 hectares). If you are using compound fertilizer, it is recommended to apply about 20-25 kg per mu.
