Oranges are prone to mold if not stored properly, so learning the correct preservation methods is very important; otherwise, the oranges will spoil and it would be a huge waste. So how can you preserve oranges and extend their shelf life? Here are the details:

1. Refrigerator preservation

Generally speaking, storing oranges in the refrigerator extends their shelf life compared to room temperature storage. Using a freezer bag before refrigerating them can further extend their shelf life. However, orange peels are thin and can absorb odors from the refrigerator, which can damage their nutritional value and taste, ultimately causing them to spoil. Therefore, it's best to consume them as soon as possible.

2. Baking soda for preservation

Baking soda is alkaline and can inhibit Penicillium and Green molds that thrive in slightly acidic environments. Prepare 3000 ml of water and add 30 grams of baking soda (100:1 ratio). Stir the baking soda until fully dissolved. Then, add the oranges, ensuring they are completely submerged in the solution. Rub each orange individually to ensure they are thoroughly coated with the solution. Afterward, remove the oranges and air-dry them in a well-ventilated area.

3. Garlic water for preservation

Boil a pot of garlic water, then let it cool. Soak the oranges in the cooled garlic water. After soaking, let them air dry naturally. Once the oranges are dry, put them in a bag and seal it. Because the oranges were soaked in garlic water, their surface is sterile, allowing them to be stored for about two months.

4. Preserving pine needles

Prepare a cardboard box. Line the bottom with a layer of pine needles, then arrange the tangerines of similar size on top, with the stems facing upwards. Once the box is full, cover it with another layer of pine needles, repeating this process until the box is full. Finally, cover the top with a 2-centimeter-thick layer of pine needles and seal the box tightly. Store at room temperature, turning the box over once a month. This method can preserve freshness for more than six months.
