Lychee seedlings can survive within a month of being planted. However, the best time to transplant them is between February and March in spring, when the climate is suitable and conducive to the root growth and recovery of the lychee tree.
How to improve the survival rate of transplanted lychee seedlings?
1. Seedling treatment
When the seedlings are growing vigorously, some branches and leaves should be pruned, especially for seedlings without soil. It is best to remove all the leaves and wrap the branches with grafting film.
2. Soil preparation
Dig planting holes 0.8m-1m deep and wide beforehand. If the soil is poor, replace it with well-draining, loose sandy loam, disinfect it, and improve aeration. The planting hole should be larger than the tree ball, preferably 2 to 3 times its size, to help the seedling survive.
3. Transplanting operation
Place the lychee seedlings into the prepared holes, ensuring the roots are completely buried in the soil. Gently press the soil down with your hands to ensure it is firmly attached to the roots. Water thoroughly immediately after transplanting to ensure the soil and roots are in full contact.
4. Post-planting management
After transplanting lychee seedlings, keep the soil moist but avoid waterlogging. Apply diluted fertilizer frequently, using 3-5 kg of well-rotted manure per seedling around the planting hole to encourage multiple shoots throughout the year. When pruning, remove diseased, weak, crossing, and inward-growing branches, retaining healthy outward-growing branches to improve ventilation and light penetration, thus promoting growth.
