Household registration (hukou) is crucial for everyone. It follows us from birth and serves as our identity document as citizens. According to my country's household registration system, there are many types of hukou. So what are they specifically? Let's take a look.

What are the different types of household registration?

Household registration type refers to the nature of household registration, which is divided into urban household registration (non-agricultural household registration) and agricultural household registration . The specific nature of household registration can be further divided into four types: rural resident family household, rural resident collective household, urban resident family household, and urban resident collective household.

What are the differences between agricultural household registration and urban household registration?

1. Different definitions

Agricultural household registration mainly refers to farmers who live in rural areas and earn their living through their own labor. Urban household registration, on the other hand, refers to residents who rely on state-allocated jobs or food.

2. Different methods of acquiring land

Rural residents' homesteads are mostly allocated by the state, and they can build houses on them. In the event of demolition or expropriation, they can also receive substantial compensation. In contrast, urban residents mostly have to buy houses and do not have the right to use collectively owned land.

3. Differences in education

In cities, access to quality educational resources is relatively easy for urban residents. However, those with rural household registration may need to pay fees and face higher barriers to entry.

4. Differences in insurance coverage

The biggest difference between the two lies in the types of insurance they participate in. Rural residents with employment will pay for the five social insurances, while those without employment can pay for the New Rural Social Insurance. Urban residents, on the other hand, will have their five social insurances and housing fund paid by their employers, while those without employment can pay freely, but only for medical insurance and pension insurance.

5. Different job opportunities

Urban residents enjoy more opportunities in the job market, can engage in various industries and professions, and have a wider range of employment choices. Those with agricultural household registration, on the other hand, mainly engage in agricultural production and rural-related work.
